Simple Energy Slaps Rs40,000 Price Hike on One Electric Scooter

News by Team Drivio | 28 Dec 2023

Entry price point swells to Rs1.10 lakh effective January 2024

  • Simple Energy has hiked ex-showroom prices of the One e-scooter by Rs40,000
  • New pricing to come into effect starting January 2024 across India
  • Justification cited includes rising input costs, production scaling & inflationary pressures
  • Entry ex-showroom price inflates from Rs1.10 lakh vs. earlier Rs70,000

In a surprising development, homegrown EV maker Simple Energy has announced a steep Rs40,000 price increase on its sole offering - the One electric scooter. The revised ex-showroom pricing will come into effect nationwide starting January 2024.

Justification & New Prices

Simple Energy cites mounting input costs as the primary driver behind the price hike. Further factors include the company scaling up production capacity to meet demand and broader inflationary pressures.

The entry ex-showroom price point of the One e-scooter version will now swell to Rs1.10 lakh, a significant Rs40,000 premium over the introductory Rs70,000 pricing. The range-topping model also sees a similar price inflation with an ex-showroom tag of Rs1.40 lakh.

The sudden price hike makes the Simple One scooter less affordable and reduces its price competitiveness significantly. Buyers who managed to purchase the vehicle before the end of December 2023 would have secured substantial savings.

Simple One E-Scooter Highlights

Despite the price surge, the Made-in-India One electric scooter still retains its segment-leading 4.8 kWh battery pack offering 236 km of certified range as per IDC.

Other highlights of the feature-rich e-scooter:

  • 72V lithium-ion battery with portable replacement
  • Top speed of 105 kmph
  • 4.5 hours for full charge
  • Digital instrument cluster
  • Combined braking system
  • 3 riding modes
  • Theft protection & geo-fencing

While the reasons behind the price hike appear largely justified from Simple Energy's perspective, it still comes as a shock for prospective buyers. The inflated pricing also brings the One e-scooter closer to more premium rivals. How the price rise impacts sales volumes and customer sentiment remains to be seen.
