Electric Scooter vs Petrol Scooter Running Cost in 2026: TVS iQube vs Activa vs Jupiter

Overview

This guide compares the electric scooter vs petrol scooter running cost for the TVS iQube, Honda Activa 110 and TVS Jupiter 110. It converts electricity into rupees per kilometre, adds charging losses, and compares petrol cost using real-world mileage. It covers monthly cost at six daily distances, maintenance, EMI, annual savings and which rider each scooter suits. Electric range and petrol mileage are not compared directly.

Charging an iQube costs roughly ₹0.19 to ₹0.34 per km. Petrol in an Activa or Jupiter costs about ₹2.00 per km. For most commuters, the electric scooter is far cheaper to run.

Why range and mileage cannot be compared

Range (km per charge) and mileage (km per litre) measure different things, so this article converts both into rupees per kilometre.

Electric: The iQube 3.1 kWh has a claimed IDC range of 123 km. Scooters of this class, including the iQube 3.1, deliver about 80 to 90 km at real-world speeds. I use 85 km.

  • Battery energy per km: 3.1 kWh ÷ 85 km = 0.0365 kWh.

  • Charging losses: I assume 15% (my planning assumption, not a TVS figure).

  • Energy drawn from the wall: 0.0365 ÷ 0.85 = about 0.043 kWh per km.

Petrol: Owner-reported Jupiter mileage is around 50 to 56 km/l. Activa 110 estimates run 47 to 60 km/l. I use 50 km/l for the Activa and 52 km/l for the Jupiter. Verify against your own riding.

Electricity and petrol prices

Delhi domestic tariffs are ₹3 per unit for the first 200 units and ₹4.50 for 201 to 400 units. Adding an EV can push a household into a costlier slab, so I show ₹4.50 and ₹8 per unit. A June 2026 surcharge order also raises effective bills.

Petrol prices were last checked on 16 October 2026 for Delhi and 9 October 2026 for Mumbai and Bengaluru. Delhi petrol was ₹102.12 a litre, up from ₹94.77 before June. Mumbai was ₹111.21 and Bengaluru ₹110.82. Prices can change daily.

At 100 km a day, the iQube’s 85 km real range would force a mid-day top-up. In practice, 60 km a day is the sensible upper limit for this variant.

Maintenance, insurance and EMI

Keep these as separate lines when budgeting.

  • Maintenance (my assumption): about ₹350 a month for a petrol scooter, covering oil changes, filters and wear items. About ₹150 for the iQube, with no engine oil. Actual servicing varies by dealer.

  • Insurance: I have no verified premium figures. Premiums depend on the insured value, which is higher for the iQube, so get quotes for each model.

  • EMI: The Delhi on-road price of the Activa 110 STD is ₹83,715, with EMI from ₹1,287 a month. The iQube starts from ₹1,770 a month. These use different tenure and down-payment assumptions, so compare like for like.

  • Purchase price: iQube 3.1 kWh ex-showroom prices range from about ₹1.00 lakh to ₹1.22 lakh across sources, so confirm locally. Battery warranty terms also matter for long-term ownership.

Annual savings

At 30 km a day (10,950 km a year), petrol costs about ₹22,360 on the Activa and ₹21,500 on the Jupiter. The iQube costs ₹2,100 to ₹3,760 for electricity. The annual saving is about ₹17,700 to ₹20,300. Heavier use saves more, and a lighter rider may not recover the premium for years.

Practical tips

  • Charge at night on the lowest slab, and keep the battery between about 20% and 80% for daily use.

  • Ride smoothly, because aggressive acceleration cuts real range on the iQube and mileage on petrol scooters alike.

  • On petrol scooters, keep tyre pressure correct and service on schedule.

  • Check Drivio’s mileage comparator with your own tariff and daily distance.

Comparator integration ideas

Drivio’s existing mileage comparator could add an electricity-tariff field. It could also add a charging-loss slider and a toggle that converts range into cost per km. A side-by-side view of the iQube and Activa would then show monthly cost and annual savings.

Who should buy which

Choose the iQube if you ride 20 to 60 km a day, can charge at home, and plan to keep the scooter for several years. Choose the Activa for light use, a lower purchase price and a wide service network. Choose the Jupiter for slightly lower fuel cost and more storage than the Activa. If you ride under 10 km a day or have no home charging, the petrol scooters make more sense.

At 30 km a day in Delhi, a TVS iQube 3.1 kWh costs roughly ₹174 to ₹309 a month in electricity. An Activa or Jupiter costs about ₹1,770 to ₹1,840 in petrol. That is a saving of ₹17,700 to ₹20,300 a year. The gap widens with distance, but the iQube’s higher purchase price and limited practical range decide who benefits most.
