India Two-Wheeler Sales February 2026: Hero, Honda, and the Great EV Surge
by | 6 Mar 2026
February 2026 was a blockbuster month for the Indian auto retail sector. Propelled by favorable tax reforms, surging rural demand, and a rapidly expanding electric vehicle (EV) market, the industry witnessed massive momentum.
Total vehicle retail across all categories reached 24.09 lakh units, translating to a strong 25.62% Year-on-Year (YoY) growth. The two-wheeler segment served as the primary engine for this boom, recording 1,700,505 units sold—a robust 25.02% YoY increase.
Key Drivers: Post-GST Boom and Rural Liquidity
The sustained momentum in the Indian two-wheeler market is heavily attributed to the GST rate cut implemented in late 2025, which reduced taxes from 28% to 18% for sub-350cc motorcycles.
Additionally, rural retail grew by a remarkable 22.16% YoY. Stable agricultural incomes and improved access to digital micro-financing have made entry-level commuters and practical scooters highly accessible. Urban markets also outpaced expectations, delivering a 28.96% retail growth.
The Ultimate Brand Battle: Hero MotoCorp vs. Honda
The top-tier battle for supremacy in India remains incredibly tight. While Honda captured the overall global volume lead through an aggressive export strategy, Hero MotoCorp fiercely defended its domestic crown.
- Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI): Honda emerged as the overall volume leader with 5,67,351 total units (+34.30% YoY). This included 5,13,190 domestic sales and a strong export pipeline of 54,161 units. Models like the Honda Activa and Shine continue to anchor these impressive numbers.
- Hero MotoCorp: Registering the highest overall growth among top players, Hero posted a massive 44% YoY surge, dispatching 5,58,216 total units. Hero comfortably won the domestic market battle with 5,16,968 units sold within India, fueled by the legendary Splendor and a sharp 63.5% YoY spike in scooter demand.
- TVS Motor Company: Securing third place, TVS dispatched 5,07,862 units (+30% YoY). TVS maintains a highly optimized balance, moving 3,65,471 units domestically while shipping 142,391 units to international markets.
- Bajaj Auto: Bajaj continues its reign as India's export king. Out of its 3,79,921 total units (+27% YoY), 1,93,757 were exported overseas, edging out its domestic sales of 1,86,164 units.
- Suzuki & Royal Enfield: Suzuki posted a highly impressive 37% YoY growth with 1,23,299 units. Meanwhile, Royal Enfield recorded steady, mature growth in the premium mid-size motorcycle segment, selling 1,00,905 units (+11% YoY).
The Electric Two-Wheeler Shift: TVS Leads the Charge
The electric two-wheeler landscape in India is shifting rapidly from early adoption to mainstream integration. February 2026 recorded a massive 46% YoY surge in EV retail sales, pushing the EV market share to 6.57%.
- TVS Motor dominated the EV space, retailing 31,600 electric units (a 67% YoY jump) to capture a commanding 28% market share.
- Ather Energy followed with a strong showing of 20,581 units (+72% YoY), maintaining a firm grip on the premium smart-scooter demographic.
- Hero's Vida brand showed significant traction, recording 12,514 registrations, achieving a three-fold increase in market share compared to the previous year.
- Legacy EV leader Ola Electric experienced a shift in market dynamics, dropping to the sixth position with 3,968 units, overtaken by brands like Greaves Electric Mobility.
Q4 Market Outlook for FY2026
As the 2025-2026 financial year draws to a close, the two-wheeler market is transitioning from a sharp post-GST rebound into a phase of stable, calibrated growth. The industry is on track for a record-breaking close. The next quarter's trajectory will depend heavily on whether the EV segment can push beyond top-tier cities, and if the 100-125cc commuter motorcycle segment can sustain its momentum as inventory levels normalize.
